On this week’s Popcast, a conversation about New York rap in the 1990s and early 2000s, the long-forgotten tension of pop crossover, and a night that brought the spirit of battle back to Verzuz, which had begun to turn into a lovefest. Maybe the Ruff Ryders got an internal pep talk from their partner and Verzuz co-owner. But the battle took place in a boxing ring, and that set the tone: The Lox emerged triumphant. Early in the battle, the Lox set the narrative by chastising Dipset for rapping over beats with backing vocals. The night featured two of New York’s most historically vital hip-hop crews, the Lox and Dipset, facing off at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden.įrom a distance, it seemed like a light mismatch - Dipset, Cam’ron and his extended crew, are flashy and theatrical, and the Lox are workmanlike and relentless. Shout out hip-hop, New York, The LOX, and Dipset. These are two legendary groups that I’ve listened to for decades and still go hard to this day. It is definitely one of my personal favorites and I’m not sure how it could be topped. This Verzuz puts The Lox vs Dipset in a battle between two of Hip-Hops biggest groups of. The group made their way to Madison Square Garden to take on local borough rival, Harlems Dipset. For young fans: This is what New York City Hip-Hop sounds like. I still think they could have brought better picks from the catalog and rotation early on, but LOX really took this area. THE Lox is a group of East Coast rappers that competed in the latest VERZUZ battle in NYC on August 3, 2021. D Block…err…the LOX effortlessly blended classic beats for some verses, went from solo to feature to group songs with ease, and also responded to the ladies’ call with an incredible bout of haymaker selections. While both sets’ structures weren’t the best in my mind, the Diplomats saved way too much of the “platinum” for the end of their set. The Diplomats on the other hand regularly forget the words to their own songs (Juelz…I don’t mean disrespect, but wtf). They’ve not only clearly picked up performance skills, but they also mesh effortlessly like brothers finishing each other’s bars. Meanwhile, the LOX is the product of many global tours with one of the best performers of all time. Legal issues have been at the root of a lot of that, but their lack of consistently rocking together showed. While Dipset does tour from time to time, there’s a visible, unconcealed internal conflict, leading to a reputation of regularly not having all members present for shows.
THE LOX AND DIPSET BATTLE PROFESSIONAL
Performance SkillsĪ few songs into the Verzuz, it becomes apparent that one group is a polished, well-oiled professional machine and one needs to hit rehearsal a few more times. These guys have Grammys, and they’ve also worked with the top hip-hop and R&B talent.

These songs HIT and some were indeed true “hits.” But when you look at the LOX catalog, including features, the decision is not so simple. “Dipset Anthem”, “Oh Boy”, “I Really Mean It”, “Suck It Or Not”, and “Balling”. Hits from Dipset and The LOXĪt a surface glance, it seems like Dipset would take this category. Dipset, however, cultivates their own sound better and I thought their hits were going to hit harder as a result but that wasn’t the case. Both crews have also worked with hall of fame legendary products. Both crews have big hits, solo hits, group hits, and features on other artists’ hits.

I like both groups yet I probably listen to more Dipset. A post shared by The Diplomats Dipset be completely honest, I thought that Dipset was going to take this.
